The Ditmar Awards were announced on Sunday night in Melbourne at Continuum 13. The full shortlist/ballot can be found at this link and I will copy the final results into the end of this post. First I want to share some specific excitement from the results.

Defying Doomsday won in the Best Collected Work category!!!, along with Dreaming the Dark by Jack Dann.

I've read two and a half of these (the half being the Peek) and do have Thief's Magic waiting on my TBR. Shall have to try to get to it in time. Haven't read any of the books in that Nix series, either. I've heard a lot about it, but from my own point of view, it's a complete unknown quantity.

A disappointingly short shortlist here. There were so many strong anthologies and collections put out in 2014 I would have hoped more of them might have been widely-enough read to have made the shortlist. Not that these books aren't deserving, of course. (I haven't read the Best Of, actually, since it wasn't submitted to the Aurealis Awards for whatever reason.) Or perhaps the issue was too many equally ranked books in a strong fourth place. In any case, stand-by for the Aurealis shortlist to be released in a couple of weeks.

Ditmar nominations close alarmingly soon

Basically, there are not many days left to get your Ditmar nominations in. Normally I would do a post about all the eligible books I liked in the past year that I think are particularly worthy of being nominated. This year I don't feel like I can publicly mention any anthologies/collections/short stories because of Aurealis judging, which would normally a big part of the post. But I'll still mention some novels I enjoyed last year.

Ditmar Award Winners 2014

The Ditmar Awards and the Norma K Hemming Award (and the Victorian Chronos Awards) were announced at Continuum X this evening. Thanks to the tweeting prowess of @AlanBaxter and the Continuum Convention twitter account, I and others were able to follow along the proceedings at home. So as you can see, I've only read two of these and, other than Trucksong which is in my TBR, I haven't really heard much about the others. The other Paul Collins book is a bit of a surprise, not because I don't think it's a good read, but because it's unusual to see a YA (or younger?) book 3 make an appearance. Also notable is that Tansy is the only woman on the list and that only two Aurealis-shortlisted stories made the list (Ink Black Magic and Trucksong). It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Ditmar and Hugo nominations

I decided that this was the weekend to get my Ditmar and Hugo nominations in order. And then I (mostly) did.

Ditmars

Starting with the Australian stuff, I basically nominated the eligible novels I gave five stars to that were eligible (having a spreadsheet of all the books I read with ratings and author countries comes in super useful).

I also want to mention two YA novels I was surprised not to see on the Aurealis short list (I suspect because of a large quantity of good books). Links to my reviews:

For the Hugos, I had some similar thoughts but with some international additions that I also gave five stars to.

For Dramatic Presentation Long Form (aka movies), I enjoyed Frozen a lot, and Hunger Games: Catching Fire was good. I also enjoyed City of Bones and Star Trek Into Darkness. I kind of fizzled out on Short Form after Neil Gaiman's Doctor Who episode, though, since I don't want to spend too much time contemplating Doctor Who right now. Also the final episode of Futurama, Meanwhile, was very good.

Oh and the Five(ish) Doctors Reboot was the best. I'm putting it under best related work, because I think that's where it belongs. (Feel free to correct me, there's still time to change.)
